Mindfulness is the art of non-judgmental, compassionate, awareness of internal and external present moment experience. Our language
of feelings often judges, discounts, or ignores our present moment experiences. We are socialized to express present moment experiences
with statements such as:
“I hate feeling so tired!”
“These cheap shoes are killing my feet!”
“I have a rotten headache!”
When experience
is approached without qualification and judgment, language changes to reflect validation and respect of our present moment observations.
“I
feel drained of energy and notice the need to rest.”
“My feet ache and I realize that I have been standing most of the day.”
“I notice
a pressure between my eyes.”
In mindfulness, compassionate awareness is expressed as a friendly, accepting, welcoming, noticing of
the present moment experience. In being aware of fatigue, ache, or pressure, we accept it, open our heart to it, speak to it with
affection and express it with kindness.
Mindfulness focuses on what is happening in the “here and now”, in the present moment. It is
not remembering past experience nor anticipating future experience. It is about being aware that we are tired when we are feeling
tired. We merely observe our thoughts, feelings, and actions as we experience them without qualification and judgment. It is about
asking:
“How am I feeling?”
“Where in my body am I feeling the experience?”
“What kind of feeling is it?”
“What thoughts and/or
memories arise from this feeling?”
We are open to the feeling, speak to it and openly wait for a response. In mindfulness therapy,
these three elements (non-judgmental, compassionate awareness and present moment experience) are put into practice. One becomes
open to self, to learning, to interacting with that which was previously unconscious to us toward nurturing and accepting new insights.
I provide a safe, comforting, nurturing approach to experience mindfulness toward self practice and mastery.
